Bible Stories for Grown-Ups

Easily the most misunderstood book of the Bible, Revelation is not really about dragons and rapture - it is about following Jesus in the midst of empire.

So often the Bible has been used for exclusion and people have misinterpreted it in ways that have caused pain for many of us. And, we often find ourselves struggling to read and understand these stories that were written thousands of years ago. This year, we will be working our way through some of the most well-known stories and passages in Scripture, starting in Genesis and ending in Revelation, with the goal of interpreting them in ways that lead to Christlikeness, healthy community, and flourishing for absolutely everybody.

Scripture & References

The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who faithfully reported everything he saw. This is his report of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. God blesses the one who reads the words of this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says, for the time is at hand. Revelation 1:1-3

“John does not believe in literal dragons and beasts and very scary grasshoppers. He believes in the ability of art to illuminate the world.” Jeremy Duncan

“By looking at what images and symbols meant in that ancient time and place, we discover that Revelation is a highly political, but also deeply theological, text. It offers us a profound way to think about evil as something found in structures and systems, and to ponder what an ethical response to such evil might be.” Robyn Whitaker
