Why OpenDoor Exists
OpenDoor was created after conversations with Casa Marianella’s legal clinic revealed a recurring need.
For many immigrants and asylum seekers, an application may be ready to file, but the required government fee is simply too expensive. That cost can delay a work permit, prevent a family from moving forward with its immigration case, or leave someone at greater risk of detention.
How Does It Work?
01 A trusted partner identifies the need
OpenDoor’s community partners confirm the filing need and refers someone who cannot afford the cost.
02 OpenDoor pays the filing expense
OpenDoor provides a zero-interest, zero-fee loan. Payment is made on the borrower’s behalf directly to the US government.
03 Repayments help the next person
After a grace period, repayment begins and funds return so the same dollars can help someone else.
